Teens! Protect Your Hearing! Word Of Warning From KHTS’s Senior Hour

An epidemic of hearing loss has begun to show its face. Dr. Ginny Veloz of Santa Clarita Hearing Center knows the answer.

In a recent episode of the Senior Hour at KHTS, Dr. Ginny Veloz reflected with hosts about the rapidly growing rate of hearing loss in her patients. According to Dr. Veloz, at the beginning of her practice, her patients were mainly aged between 75-95 years old. Now, she is seeing more and more patients in their 40’s-50’s.

One theory that has presented itself is the development in technology. The invention of the Walkman in 1979 brought music directly next to the ears, only getting closer and louder since then. Nowadays, even cars have off-the-chart strength bass speakers that can shake the ground around the vehicle.

The introduction of these devices and tools has been rapidly lowering the age of major hearing loss according to Veloz. Senior Hour co-host Barbara Cochran reminds teens to be wary and remember their mortality when choosing to play music in the car, go to loud concerts, and participate in other loud activities.

With younger and younger patients coming in with major hearing deficits, Dr. Veloz agrees with Barbara Cochran, cautioning teens and young adults about protecting their hearing while they still can.

“Hearing problems affect the people we love, the activities we enjoy and the freedom we deserve. Hearing loss often occurs gradually, and many people don’t realize how much they’ve been missing or when it is time to seek the help of experts. Many people don’t realize how much modern hearing technology can change their life,” said Santa Clarita Hearing Center.

Some signs of hearing loss you can be on the lookout for according to Santa Clarita Hearing Center’s Dr. Veloz are asking people to repeat themselves, difficulty hearing over the phone, having to turn the TV volume very high, leaning towards people speaking, and having a hard time ordering in restaurants. Look out for these in yourself and your loved ones, and acknowledge it might be time to look into getting your hearing tested.
